'Am I going to die?' What pretty factory employee asked doctors after being scalped by conveyor belt when she was dragged in by her hair and scarf

  • Recalled how she coughed up blood and thought she would not survive
  • Company forced to pay £60,000 fine after admitting it was at fault

The horrific ordeal of a factory worker who suffered life-changing injuries after being dragged into a conveyor belt has been revealed in the statement she gave to a court hearing over the accident.

Kelly Nield recalled how she was 'coughing up blood' as she felt herself pulled into the mechanism - but the factory floor was so busy that nobody noticed the accident.

After being rushed to hospital, she feared her injuries would prove fatal, and asked doctors, "Am I going to die?"'

Mainetti UK, the company which owned the factory on Deeside in North Wales, was yesterday hit with a huge fine over the incident, which left Miss Nield spending three months in hospital.

The firm was forced to pay out £60,000 and meet costs of £21,600 after being faced with four charges brought by the Health and Safety Executive relating to the 'horrific accident' which took place in April 2009.

In a statement, Miss Nield, now 24, revealed the full horror of the incident.

'I was in total shock so I couldn't feel much pain to begin with but I was panic-stricken,' she said. 'I knew I was in trouble. I started banging on the belt and shouting for help.'

'I was coughing up blood and thinking, "Oh my god, oh my god." It all happened so fast. I could see my finger dangling there and I couldn't breathe, but the factory was noisy and nobody had seen it happen.

'Then my friend spotted me and ran to press the main off button, but as I watched her it felt like it all happened in slow motion. A workman raced over and found some scissors to cut the scarf but my throat immediately began to swell up and I couldn't speak.

'I was very gurgly and I could hardly breathe. I remember feeling very weak and wanting to sleep. Later I kept asking doctors, "Am I going to die?"'

Miss Nield was working at the coat hanger factory for £7 an hour when she leaned forward to free some hangers which were caught in the machinery.

Her scarf became entangled in the cogs of a conveyor belt, which then dragged in her hair.

As she tried to free herself her hand was caught in the machine, trapping her little finger and almost severing it.

After the accident she sustained serious injuries to the neck and throat, lost much of her hair and fractured her finger.

Miss Nield was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital, where she remained for three months while undergoing a series of operations.

She now has disabling injuries and has been fitted with a stomach peg to feed her liquids because she is unable to swallow, as well as suffering from flashbacks and trauma, prosecutor Simon Parrington told Mold Crown Court.

Judge Niclas Parry said that it was 'an accident waiting to happen', adding that Miss Nield's horrific injuries were entirely foreseeable due to Mainetti's lax safety standards.

Mr Parrington said that the company failed to provide proper instruction, prevent access to dangerous parts of the machinery or install an emergency stop button on the factory floor.

Miss Nield, an agency worker, had watched a 15-minute training DVD, but was not warned about the dangers of working with conveyors before she started doing so.

Her accident came on the first day she worked on the conveyor line, when she 'had to rely on her fellow workers to show her what to do', according to Mr Parrington.

Simon Antrobus, defending, said that the company officials wished to apologise to Miss Nield and added that the firm accepted full responsibility for her ordeal.

'It does not seek to evade responsibility or pass the buck,' he said.

He claimed the accident was a result of workers failing to follow the company's own safety procedures, but admitted that managers should have rectified this failure.

Mr Antrobus added that Mainetti had a good safety record and had recently moved to a new factory in North Wales with updated procedures.

He also pointed to the company's charity work and good reputation among its own employees as mitigation.

Alessandra Ambrosio raises temperatures in Miami

That's why they made her an Angel! Alessandra Ambrosio raises temperatures in Miami as she models a hot pink bra

    By Daily Mail Reporter

    |

She was picking up her adorable four-year-old daughter from school in Los Angeles less than 24 hours prior.

But it was back to work for Alessandra Ambrosio as she slipped onto set for Victoria's Secret in Miami on Tuesday.

The Brazilian bombshell was posing in a hot pink bra and white and gold Angel wings for her latest shoot for the lingerie giant.

Alessandra, who had the honour of modelling Victoria Secret's $2.5million Fantasy Bra last year, was fawned over by a team of make-up artists, hair and wardrobe stylists as she got into character to model another push-up.

The 31-year-old was polished to perfection for the shoot, with highlighter and gloss giving her a bronzed glow befitting of a Miami beach babe.

She was seen later in the day waiting on set in a more racy G-string and garter belt.

But Alessandra seemed to be feeling shy no long after as she covered her top in a pink and white branded towel while she talked to a member of the team.

The brunette beauty has snapped back into shape since giving birth to her second child last year - having to climb back onto the catwalk for the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show spectacular filmed last November.

Back to work: Alessandra didn't seem to feel uneasy about walking around in her underwear off camera

Racy in lace: The Brazilian model was later seen in a sexy black garter belt

She clearly revels in being a mom when she's not on set, however.

On Monday, Alessandra was seen scooping up her little girl Anja after the four-year-old's school day in Los Angeles.

Indulging her little girl, she had a look of surprise on her face as they had a conversation while Alessandra toted her on her hip.

British model Poppy Delevingne has today been announced as the new face of fashion brand Vero Moda.

The fashion house released its new spring/summer campaign with Poppy starring at the centre.

The 26-year-old London-based model and actress showcases the latest looks from the Danish label brand, with plenty of monochrome prints, feminine florals and denim.

'I'm a spontaneous dresser,' the 5ft 10in model said in a behind-the-scenes film shot on location. 'There's no method to the madness. I wake up and I decide what to wear on the spot.'

Selecting a few favourite items from the s/s13 collection, Poppy said of a khaki parka she would 'wear and wear it all spring', some floral skinny jeans would be perfect for a 'wild night out' and a transparent black and white stripe blouse was 'very French.'

Poppy, who is the older sister of model of the year Cara Delevingne, 20, also shared her top styling secret: 'Follow and trust your instinct. Your instinct is always right.'

Of the appointment of the successful model, who also starred in Matthew Williamson's recent 15 year anniversary celebration campaign, a Vero Moda spokesman said: 'Poppy Delevingne adds lightness and femininity to the images, without ever losing her edge.

'Graphic and minimalist locations were chosen for the shoot to create an eye-catching reflection of Poppy’s fresh look and the more stringent lines of the location.'

The brand said their spring collection would be a work of contrasts, with monochrome prints acting as the perfect foil for feminine florals, soft textiles and graphic two-piece sets.

The brand's signature pieces - high waisted skinny jeans and featherlight chiffon tops - are also big business for the new season.

“You need only have taken the first step and I would have taken one to meet you

    Dreams

One of my blog readers forwarded me an email which I find really meaningful… It’s a story about dreams and regrets. I hope that after reading this story, it will inspire you to seize the day and do everything that you have always dreamt about.

    ***

A man lay on his bed at the end of his life waiting to die. His dream came to pay its last respects and bid farewell to the man who had never used it.

As it entered the room the man looked down in shame.

Why did you not realise me?” the dream asked.

“Because I was afraid,” the man said.

Afraid of what?” asked the dream.

“I was afraid I would fail.”

But haven’t you failed by not attempting to use me?

“Yes I have, but I always thought there would be tomorrow.”

You fool!” said the dream, “Did it never occur to you that there was only ever today… the moment that you are in right now? Do you think that now that death is here you can put it off until tomorrow?

“No.” said the man, a tear gently rolling down his cheek.

The dream was softer now, because it knew that there were two types of pain – the pain of discipline, and the pain of regret – and while discipline weighs ounces, regret weighs pounds.

Then the dream leaned forward to gently wipe away the tear and said, “You need only have taken the first step and I would have taken one to meet you, for the only thing that ever separated us was the belief in your mind that you couldn’t have me.

Then they said goodbye and they both died.

That's gotta hurt: Naomi Campbell forced to wear ballet pumps to party after she's injured in Paris mugging

    By J J Anisiobi

As one of Britain's most iconic fashion models she is used to strutting down the runway in high heels.

But, Naomi Campbell stepped out in some very unlikely footwear as she put her best dress on for a glamorous party on Sunday evening.

The 42-year-old looked superb during the night out as she attended the NBC Universal 2013 TCA Winter Press Tour Party.

Slip on: Naomi was forced to leave her heels at home and wore a very plain pair of ballet pumps

However, instead of wearing a pair of her trademark high heels she sported some flat shoes to make her night out a little easier.

Naomi, who was at The Langham Huntington Hotel and Spa in Pasadena, California, looked lovely in her plunging neckline dress as she hung out with fellow models Karolina Kurkova and Coco Rocha.

Her good friend and former male model Nigel Barker also joined the group as they made a very stylish pack.

Although Miss Campbell's footwear may have let down her outfit, it is most likely she was forced to wear the flats due to her recent injury.

Naomi was left in a wheelchair after thieves attempted to snatch her handbag as she sat in a limousine in central Paris, French in November 2012.

Revelations about the attack last November came following claims about a ‘violent mugging’ which saw the supermodel end up in a wheelchair.

There were reports that she had been attacked just before Christmas as she tried to hail a taxi in the French capital.

In fact she was already sitting in the car when two men on a motorbike are said to have tried to grab her handbag on November 21.

The attempted snatch took place in Rue de Moussy, in the trendy Marais district of central Paris, just off the Rue de Rivoli.

Nothing was taken, but Ms Campbell filed a complaint at the nearby police station of the 4th arrondissement.

There she refused to have a medical examination, but was later pictured in a wheelchair and wearing a brace.

Sources in New York later claimed Ms Campbell had suffered a torn leg ligament in the bag snatch.

Luckily for Naomi her billionaire boyfriend, Vladimir Doronin, was able to send his private jet to fly her to Vail, Colorado, where she was treated by J. Richard Steadman, one of the world's leading orthopedic surgeons.

Chris de Burgh's Miss World daughter Rosanna Davison engaged after Wesley Quirke proposes with stunning £32,000 ring

    By Eoin Murphy

    |

For almost seven years, they have been the Irish social scene’s golden couple. She was the elegant former Miss World and the daughter of one of the country’s most prolific musicians. He was the chiselled part-time model, part-time businessman and son of a multimillionaire entrepreneur.

And yesterday morning, Wesley Quirke proposed to Rosanna Davison with a customised ring, believed to be worth in the region of €40,000 (£32,000) in Mauritius.

The pair had been staying at Le Saint Géran Hotel on the north-east coast of the island, where the Davison family have holidayed every Christmas and New Year for the past 18 years.

After a family meal at the five-star resort, 29-year-old Quirke took his girlfriend to the beach when he went down on one knee and asked for the model’s hand in marriage.

Fittingly, Rosanna looked the epitome of the glamorous ‘lady in red’, decked out in a fitted taffeta strapless cocktail dress, complete with black Louboutins.

Who could say no to that? Rosanna's customised ring is thought to have cost in the region of £32,000
Who could say no to that? Rosanna's customised ring is thought to have cost in the region of £32,000

While the news may have come as a welcome surprise to most of the Davison household, one person who was definitely in the know was the 28-year-old’s father, Chris de Burgh.

‘Before the trip, Wes made sure to ask Chris’s permission to ask Rosie to marry him’, said a close friend who has known the Davison family since childhood.

‘He went to the De Burgh/Davison family jewellers in Dalkey and had the ring made especially to Rosanna’s tastes.

‘He has uncharacteristically remained coy on the final total cost – but he sold his prized Ferrari recently and I wouldn’t say he has much change out of €40,000. Certainly, he wanted to go all out with piece of jewellery befitting a former Miss World.

‘Chris had actually given him the green light weeks ago but Wes decided to wait until the Mauritius trip to propose.

‘New Year’s Eve is such a big traditional night for the family that he didn’t want to overshadow it. So he waited until the weekend and then surprised Rosanna on the beach. What was great for her was that she could celebrate immediately with all her family, who were in the resort. It is the perfect start to 2013.’

Rosanna said: ‘Wes asked me to go for a walk on the beach and it was the most gorgeous weather we’ve had so far. At the end of the beach, he got down on one knee an pulled out the ring!

‘I nearly collapsed with shock but of course I accepted immediately and we rushed back to celebrate with my family. Wes then produced a bottle of Champagne on ice from the wardrobe and we all celebrated!’

The couple, dubbed ‘Wesanna’ by the media, met in 2006 in Sandyford nightclub Club 92 and they started dating not long after when he cheekily approached her via Bebo, the social-networking site.

For the first few years of their relationship, they were the darlings of the social scene. Whether it was taking a helicopter to the Galway Races or attending black-tie ball at the Shelbourne, they rarely missed a photo opportunity.

In 2007, in an attempt to make the most of their celebrity status, Wes even joined the Assets model agency.

But this over-exposure quickly took its toll on the relationship, and within months, Quirke opted to move away from the public eye. He quit modelling, was rarely seen on the Dublin social scene, instead concentrating on his role in the family business, Dr Quirkeys Good Time Emporium.

However, with Rosanna attending an increasing number of events in a solo capacity, it came as little surprise to observers – and to friends of the couple – when it emerged that they had put their relationship ‘on ice’ in the early half of 2009.

Officially, they didn’t split entirely. But after much discussion, they agreed that a ‘break’ was needed.

‘I just needed some time to figure out what I wanted. We are stronger for it,’ said Rosanna in 2010.

‘We have great fun together. He is my best friend. I talk to him about anything and everything. He makes me laugh.'

When the couple rekindled their romance, Quirke maintained a low-key public presence. ‘He loves being with Rosie when the cameras are off,’ says a friend of his. ‘He just doesn’t like the spotlight and that wasn’t helping their relationship.’

In 2010, he asked Rosanna to move in with him in a luxury house in Foxrock. Since then, the pair have been enjoying a life of domestic bliss and got a dog, which they named Ted. Keen to have something to fall back on after modelling, Rosanna – who already has a first-class degree to her name – is studying biomedicine and nutrition.

She caused a stir after the September publication of her shoot for the German edition of Playboy.

When it comes to her nuptials, she could prove just as unpredictable. Asked how she envisaged her wedding day, Rosanna said: ‘It could be a Vegas Hangover situation. I could see myself doing that.

‘My parents would kill me. They’d miss the day out. But I like the idea of a nice wedding with my friends, family and relatives. It wouldn’t necessarily have to be a big glitzy affair at all. It would be something intimate – something very much about the couple.’

Young models should REFUSE to pose naked says lingerie model Heidi Klum: 'When you have a good body, photographers will say, "Let's take this off". You have to be strong at saying no'

    • Said favourite photographer Rankin always had her best interests at heart

Following Kate Moss's revelations that she suffered a near nervous breakdown as a teenager after being pushed into posing topless, another top model has expressed her own concerns.
Supermodel Heidi Klum may have made a name for herself by posing half naked on the cover of Sports Illustrated naked on the cover of GQ and as a lingerie-clad Victoria's Secret Angel.
But she insists young models should say no to posing nude.
Speaking to Ocean Drive in their 20th anniversary issue, the 39-year-old revealed how over the years she has learned to toe the line between tasteful and obscene at a very young age and says young girls have to remain strong.

Game changer: Heidi Klum rose to fame as the the bikini-clad (and first German) cover star of Sports Illustrated in 1998, left, and has posed nearly-naked many times - but says girls should think twice before posing nude
She said: 'When you have a good body, photographers will often be like, "Yeah, let’s take this off, and why don’t we lose this too," and you can quickly end up not wearing much clothing.

The German-born beauty also opened up about her favourite photographer Rankin, who has captured her in a variety of poses.
The mother-of-four said: 'But Rankin has always made sure, when some of my shoots would be more on the naked side, that they wouldn’t look raunchy. They were sexy, yes, but very classy.'
In fact, Rankin shot the very cover shot of her in a fitted, one-shoulder black dress for Ocean Drive's anniversary issue.
What's certain is that Heidi has forged an extremely successful career for herself. In May 2011, Forbes magazine estimated her total earnings for that year as $20 million.
She is ranked second on Forbes' list of the 'World's Top-Earning Models', behind Gisele Bündchen.

Unlike the former MAC stars, Jelena Abbou isn't a name that is quite so well known in showbiz circles - for now.
Born in April 1977 in Gornji Milanovac, Serbia, Jelena is a figure competitor-turned-model and personal trainer who currently resides in the United States.
The brunette beauty stands at 5ft 6in and competes at 118lbs. She is married to a fellow personal trainer.
She is well-known in the fitness world for her natural beauty and toned physique, which she puts down to a high-protein diet.

MAC's 'Strength' cosmetic collection, which includes everything from eyeshadows to bright lipsticks, encourages users to: 'Flex your femininity with a colour collection that's fearless, elegant and strong.
'Strike a powerful pose, stand out, redefine the notion of beauty - and do it with strength too irresistible to ignore.'
